Beware the Ides of March:

Remember when you were in high school, and read Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and one of its more memorable lines: “Beware the ides of March.”

Those few lines were a warning to Julius Caesar of his potential fate on March 15th.  As we know, Caesar ignored the warning and was assassinated in the Senate.

This is my warning: “Don’t miss the East Granby Historical Society Meeting on Thursday March 14, 2002 at 7:00PM in the East Granby Community Center”.  While the preceding does not have the majesty, the cadence and drama of Shakespeare’s famous lines, nevertheless this meeting is extremely important to our organization and the fate of the East Granby Heritage Center, the former Bates Viets House.

As I write these lines, I am aware of the hard work, the dedication and enthusiasm of so many relative to our potential future home.  I am also aware of the hope that we all have for this house, i.e., that it will provide the opportunity to “preserve the memories of yesteryear while making memories for tomorrow”.  (The latter quote comes to us thanks to Betty Ann Hayden.)  In addition, I am also aware of the opinion of Charlie Francis, the town engineer, and what has been relayed to me as the opinion of others relative to the structural integrity of the house and barn.

However, copy for the newsletter needs to be given to our editor (Zettie Shookus) well in advance of when the of the results of the RFP’s (Requests for Proposal) sent to multiple vendors (six for the barn, 12 for the house) will be known.  The Building Committee will present these results at our meeting on March 14, 2002 and we will have the opportunity to discuss them.  These results and the following discussion will impact the fate of the Bates Viets House, i.e., what we do/do not do with the property.

Please make the meeting; listen to what is reported, and make your opinions known.  In that way, you won’t be in the position of regretting the ides of March 2002.

For those who did not have the pleasure of reading Julius Caesar, the ides of March is the fifteenth day of March in the old Roman calendar --the day after our next membership meeting on March 14, 2002.  Please plan to attend!

Jim Feeney, President East Granby Historical Society

Nominating Committee:

In the upcoming weeks we will be looking to form a nominating committee to present a slate of officers and directors at our meeting in May 2002.  Please inform any of your current officers or directors if you would like to serve on this committee or if you would like to take a more active part in our organization as either an officer or director.  Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer) serve from June 1, 2002 through May 31, 2003 while directors serve for a three (3) year period.
